Meaning
This verse from the Guru Stotram, recited in the Guru Gita tradition, identifies the teacher with Brahma who creates, Vishnu who sustains and Maheshwara who dissolves. The last line goes further: guru sakshat parabrahma, the guru is directly the supreme reality, and tasmai shri gurave namah offers salutation to that guru. What is honoured is the function of awakening, not a personality.
